Fleetwood Town Community Trust is working with Planet League to help use football to get people to take action on climate change. Planet League run a competition each year where fans represent their clubs and compete with other clubs to score goals by completing activities that reduce their environmental footprint. The club with the most points at the end of each season wins the Planet League Trophy. As well as running the competitions, Planet League work with clubs to help them on their journey towards more sustainable operations, and help them engage with their fans on sustainability issues.
Planet League Cup is a unique Planetliga tournament that combines football with green actions and challenges, enabling supporters to fight climate change by taking part in the tournament’s 'green challenges' each week – from eating a meat-free meal or turning down the heating to filling up a reusable bottle with water – all in the name of their team. The campaign is supported by a number of English Premier League clubs and their Foundations, and by the British soccer climate action network Planet League, which was founded in 2010 to “use sport to help people live greener.”
Each week, a different challenge will be set – for example, one week it may be to switch from plastic to aluminum drinks bottles, while another week might be to travel more sustainably by car or train. The goal is to encourage fans to support their clubs in a variety of ways, and the club whose supporters complete the most challenges will win the Planet League Cup. The winning fan will also receive a holiday in the UK, while a range of “money-can’t-buy” prizes are also on offer to the other top teams and fans.
